Biography
Bonnie Dumanis is the first woman to serve as District Attorney for San Diego County. Upon taking office in 2003, Bonnie immediately put her management expertise and understanding of the role of the District Attorney to work by re-organizing the office to better serve the public. With public safety as her top priority, the San Diego County District Attorney's office has focused on preventing crime, reducing recidivism, helping victims of crime, and keeping the District Attorney's Office transparent, but still accessible to the public.
Bonnie's top-to-bottom understanding of the District Attorney's Office comes from experience. She originally served as a Junior Clerk Typist in the DA's Office before going to law schol and earning her law degree from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 1976. Bonnie served as both a Municipal Court and Superior Court Judge before seeking the office of San Diego District Attorney. As a Judge she helped create Drug Court to reduce recidivism by drug offenders.
Under DA Dumanis' direction, the San Diego DA's office helped write and pass CA Proposition 83, known as "Jessica's Law". This law tightens restrictions on child molesters and sexually violent predators and makes California one of the toughest states in both prosecuting and dealing with these offenders.
Bonnie lives in downtown San Diego with her partner, Denise, and their dog Jake.
